A better fit for what you save

Karakeep alternatives for your saved library

Karakeep has evolved beyond a simple link saver: its current site describes archives, AI organization, RSS, collaboration and first-party agent tools, with both self-hosting and cloud access. Savebase is our first recommendation if your priority is an operated service for supported social references, reminders and everyday research integrations.

Decide whether self-hosting is a requirement

Choose a self-hostable product when controlling the server is important and you can operate it. A managed service is a different tradeoff. Include updates, backups and integration maintenance in the decision rather than treating open-source software and a hosted subscription as equivalent operating models.

Compare the content you need preserved

Whole-page archives, uploaded files and social media backups are different objects. Savebase focuses its backup on eligible media from four social platforms. If retaining arbitrary web pages is essential, evaluate an archiving library directly rather than assuming its content can be preserved identically after migration.

When keeping Karakeep makes sense

Keep Karakeep if self-hosting, general page archives, uploaded content and its broad agent tooling are central to your system. Savebase does not offer a self-hosted edition.

Moving to Savebase

Use Savebase's Karakeep import option

Savebase file import option: Karakeep

Dashboard imports of app exports, bookmark HTML files and text URL lists require Pro. Direct browser-bookmark import through the extension is available on Free and flattens the browser folder tree. Keep the original export and test a small batch: reused URLs can merge tags and folder memberships, and incoming non-empty notes can replace existing notes.

  1. 1

Create a JSON export of the Karakeep records you want to move, retaining the original file and stored assets separately.

  2. 2

Choose Karakeep in Savebase's import dialog, upload the JSON and inspect the recognized records.

  3. 3

Verify a sample of links, notes and organization before enabling the review workflow in your new library.

A reference import does not reproduce the server, uploaded files, page archives, shared permissions or every bookmark type. Retain those through your existing backup process.

JSON export includes active saved records and their notes, tags and folder names. It contains media URLs, not media files, and currently omits transcripts and automation settings.

Questions about Karakeep alternatives

Is Savebase self-hostable like Karakeep?

No. Savebase is an operated service for your saved-content library. Choose Karakeep, Linkwarden or wallabag when self-hosting is a firm requirement. Savebase fits a managed social-reference workflow with reminders and eligible paid backup.

Does Karakeep already have MCP and RSS?

Yes. Its current official site advertises RSS feeds and first-party MCP and agent tools. These capabilities are not exclusive to Savebase. Compare the content, operating model and day-to-day workflow that each implementation supports.
